DUABIA CREEK AND DHOW WHARFAGE a great place to wander and explore the more traditional side of Dubai.
The area around the Dubai Creek can trace its origins back in time 400 years however the more recent incarnation beganin the 1830´s when the Bani Yas tribe settled in the region. The Dubai Creek now effectively splits the city into two towns with Bur Dubai to the south of the creek and Deira to the north of the creek.
On the Bur Dubai side of the creek the Bastakia neighbourhood has benefited from a waterfront regeneration and the Al Seef district boasts a promenade backed by traditional buildings and architecture, a floating market and many local stalls and shops selling local crafts. The area is well worth a stroll around and offers some amazing photo opportunities of the waterside.
The Dubai Creek has been a foundation for the growth and development of Dubai itself into one of the richest cities in the world, a foundation originally attracting settlers for the abundant fishing and of course pearl diving.
A fascinating place to visit is the Dhow Wharfage sitiuated north of Al Maktoum bridge on the banks of the creek. This area offers an insight into traditional life as it was, and still is on a smaller scale. The sailors and traders are welcoming and you can see Dhows upto 100 years old. Its not unusual to be invited oinboard for a look around and it is a wonderful opportunity to step into another world! This is now a very small part of the vast economy of a Dubai yet its tradition holds a value beyond monetary and exploring this traditional and historical side of the city can be a welcome contrast to the modern and polished cityscapes.
